17 km from Šibenik, in the village of Danilo Gornje, lies one of the most significant archaeological sites in Croatia. At the Šema Torij site, a complex of a Roman villa has been discovered, while remnants of dwellings and fortification systems from prehistory to the Middle Ages have been found on the hilltop. The site at Bitinj has resolved many questions regarding the Neolithic development in Dalmatia. Important artifacts uncovered during the research testify to the lives and customs of the inhabitants of that time. The entire Neolithic cultural circle is known as the Danilo culture, which significantly contributed to the understanding of the history of this area. Thus, Danilo Gornje is an exceptionally important place for all history and archaeology enthusiasts.
