Medieval fortress with a view of Skradin and the Krka river
The medieval fortress Turina in Skradin was built on the remains of a prehistoric Liburnian hillfort during the reign of Ban Pavao I Šubić of Bribir (1273-1312). Skradin, one of the oldest Croatian towns, traces its name back to Roman times when Scardona was an important trade and military center. After being destroyed during the migration period, the Croats rebuilt the town. Skradin became a bishop's seat in the 6th century and later, under the rule of the Šubić family, the capital of Croatia and Bosnia. The town was attacked by the Avars, Turks, and Venetians, leaving a rich historical heritage.
