Parish Church of Our Lady of the Rosary: a testament of history, art, and restoration
The parish church of Our Lady of the Rosary was built between 1871 and 1886 in the Neo-Romanesque style, based on designs by engineer Emilis. It is a three-nave structure with a semicircular apse. The exterior walls are divided by stone columns enclosing blind apses, while the façade is highlighted by a large rosette. The interior is lit by side windows and doors. The church was consecrated in 1886. During the Croatian War of Independence (1991-1995), the church suffered severe damage and was heavily devastated. The façade, arches, and rosette above the presbytery were damaged, but the most significant loss was the valuable organ, while the sculpture of Our Lady and paintings disappeared. The organ, made in 1897 by the renowned Slovenian workshop Brothers Zupan, is the largest of its kind in Croatia, with 16 registers. Since 2009, after a long period, the church’s unique sound can once again be enjoyed during Mass and concerts.
