A monumental resting place of the Meštrović family, etched in stone and tradition
The Church of the Most Holy Redeemer serves as the final resting place of the renowned Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović and his close family: his mother Marta, father Mate, brothers Marko and Petar, son Tvrtko, and wife Olga. Meštrović chose Paraćeva glavica in Petrovo polje for its construction (1926-1930), just a short walk from his family home in Otavice. The church was built as both a family tomb and a place for Mass in the vernacular, with architects Harold Bilinić and Lavoslav Horvat executing Meštrović's design.
The massive stone cube, constructed from limestone and muljika, rises 20 meters and dominates the landscape. Drawing inspiration from ancient architecture, the church’s exterior is a simple square, while the interior transforms into an octagon. Meštrović's students crafted the interior plastic art, and the reliefs in the niches depict evangelists, the Nativity, the Lamentation, and other sacred scenes.
Beneath the church lies a crypt, and the entrance was once adorned with bronze doors featuring portraits of Meštrović’s family, which were unfortunately stolen during the Croatian War of Independence and remain missing.
