The Juraj Šižgorić City Library in Šibenik is one of the city's most important cultural institutions, as evidenced by its central location on the main city square. It is unique in appearance, especially in the evening when illuminated bookshelves dominate the space. The unusual modern building housing the library is the work of Ivan Vitić, an architect whose work was once exhibited at MoMA in New York. The building has received numerous awards and is cited in literature as an example of the successful integration of modern architecture with historical construction. It was opened in 1962 as the House of the Yugoslav People’s Army and was built on the ruins of the former National Café and Slav Reading Room.
