The most significant Byzantine fortification in the Kornati archipelago
Tureta Fortress is the most significant Byzantine fortification in the Kornati archipelago, located on Kornat Island. It dates back to the 6th century, built for coastal defense and navigation control on the Adriatic Sea. Positioned on a hill above Tarac Bay, its military garrison ensured safe passage through the Kornati Channel. Tureta is unique in the Adriatic as it was not destroyed, likely because it was far from settlements, so its stones were not reused. At the foot of the hill is the Church of St. Mary, built around the same time. Though both the fortress and church are now in a state of neglect, they offer a glimpse into the region's Byzantine history and are worth visiting for their historical significance.
